and speaker boehner met privately at the white house. their first face-to-face meeting since they agreed last week to clear everyone else out of the negotiating room. neither side revealed anything about the meeting that was part of the agreement. only saying that the lines of communication remain open. but yesterday another influential republican, senator bob corker from the senate banking committee, said his party should consider the president's position on raising tax rates on the wealthy. >> there is a growing group of folks that are looking at this and realizing that we don't have a lot of cards as it relates to the tax issue before year end. i mean, we have one house, that's it. the presidency and the senate's in the democrats' hands. a lot of people are putting forth a theory, and i actually think it has merit where you go ahead and give the president the 2% increase that he's talking about, the rate increase on the top 2%, and all of a sudden the shift goes back to entitlements. i actually am beginning to believe that is the best route for us to take. >> that's significant, and jon, t

and house speaker john boehner are keeping tight lipped about their closed door weekend talks. but in michigan monday, the president had a warning about going over this now infamous fiscal cliff. >> consumer spending is going to go down. that means you've got less customers. businesses get fewer profits. they hire fewer workers. you go in a downward spiral. >> speaker boehner says he's still waiting for the president to identify spending cuts that he's willing to make to help deal with the nation's debt crisis. >>> thousands of demonstrators are expected to gather at the michigan state capital today in protest of a right-to-work measure. the legislation would bar unions from requiring non-union workers to pay those union fees. democrats met with the governor to urge a veto. and carollers gathered singing modified christmas songs in protest of the proposal. president obama said the legislation is about giving workers the right to work for less money. of course, the president enjoying a lot of support from the unions. if this does indeed happen, michigan will become the 24th rig

know, i saw that plan, that letter that boehner sent me and not going to do it even though it is the first time the republicans went on record saying they are willing to raise revenues. the president said they have to raise the rates. he looked less like monte hall and more like monte burns. itch >> gretchen: he will not hold more meetings or face to face until the republicans agree to increase the tax rates. so what was on the paper yesterday was the idea to still increase revenue without increasing the actual tax rate by getting rid of the deductions and loop holes. that is not acceptable . it au pairs a hard line stance now and the meetings are off. >> brian: they talked about a two-step process. maybe we can leave the tax rates except the horrible people that make a lot of money. leave those tax rates in place and do the hard stuff in the second half . year and of course, we have the, the debt ceiling that has to be raised in a month. if the president gets his way and forces the hand of republicans to accept something they will not forget that and he will have another b
